TOP TIPS FOR THE SALEROOMS

1. Before you buy. Visit your saleroom and get a feel for how the Auctions are conducted. If youhave any questions you can approach the auctioneer after the sale.

2. Always buy a catalogue. These are usually cheap, a couple of dollars but they will help guide you. Keep an eye out for some of the terminology. Depending on the type of auction the catalogue may go into some depth about an item, including details such as Age, Style, Condition and most importantly Estimate of price, the item is expected to reach. Of course, the estimate may be higher or lower, but usually it is fairly accurate.

3. Keep within your budget. There is a common mistake which we have all made at some time including myself and that is to have one more last bid after the highest price you wanted to pay has been reached.

4. Be Aware of Commissions. You can have both Buying and Selling commissions and you should be aware of these. They are usually stated at the back of the catalogue and remember these charges will also have GST to be added on, if not included.

5. Registration. Some auctions require you to register and will issue you with a number to hold while bidding. If your bid is successful the auctioneer will take the number down. Alternatively some auctions just require you to give your name if you are a winning bidder.

6. Bidding. This is nothing to worry about. Contrary to the popular jokes, you are not going to win a sports car if you scratch you nose or cough at the wrong time. When you bid make it clear to the auctioneer that you are bidding, either by raising your hand or your catalogue. If two people are bidding the auctioneer will not take your bid until one drops out, but don’t worry he will not forget you.

7. Lots per Hour. It is worth asking how many Lots the auctioneer usually gets through in an hour. This will enable you estimate when you item will be auctioned and will give you time to continue with other tasks. Always return to the auction with time to spare, in order to get settled in and to catch up with the lot numbers.
